Corps Leaders School

The weekend after Labor Day, a special event takes place in Louisiana training. The District puts on a school for commanders to prepare them for working with the various corps at Academy. These men will spend time learning the techniques needed to help them fulfill their role as Corps Commanders. As you know, the Louisiana Training Academy is The Place To Be for the best in Royal Ranger training and advancement. The corps are the advanced stages of the training offered at Academy. With this in mind, each commander prepares himself to work with the most advanced Rangers at the highest level. Corps Commander is not a position taken lightly by the District officials. Each commander is assessed on his skills and abilities as well as his "willingness" to serve wherever needed. The "servanthood" in a commander goes a long way in determining who will be commanders of which corps. We thank GOD that Louisiana has been blessed with such a "spirit of servanthood" by commanders from around the state.

Prerequisites for Attending Corps Leaders School

Leaders must have completed the Leadership Training Course for Royal Ranger leaders.

Corps Leaders must be full commander (21 years old). They must have completed at least the "Corps Leaders Command School" to be on the administrative staff of JLTC or Elite Corps. They must complete the "STT Command School" to command the STT and "Pathfinder Advanced Rescue Techniques School" or to command the Special Forces or Pathfinder Corps.

  • When the Corps Commander is selected by the District Commander and/or Academy Commander, he will be given the names of prospective staff members. Usually, the Patrol Commander will be selected by the District or Academy Commander as well. The Academy Commander is directly in charge of all the Academy staff. He will work with each Corps Commander to develop a staff for that Corps.
  • First priority for staffing the Corps will be those leaders who have taken the most training in the Corps Leaders School. Only those who have taken Phase II or Phase III training will be added to the J.T.T. Corps or Pathfinder Corps staff respectively. The Corps Commander and Patrol Commander will be men of maturity and experience, as best as possible to obtain, for any particular year. Usually, these men have been advisors or assistants to the Commander of that Corps before asked to serve in top leadership.
  • Those who are not full commander (21 years old) will have a lower priority of selection to work in the Corps. All Corps Leaders must complete Academy Staff School prior to instructing at Academy.
  • Each Corps commander and Patrol commander must check the medical records of your Corps Rangers to see if there are any special needs or precautions they may have to consider when dealing with their trainees.

The purpose of Corps Leaders School is to attract and keep older boys by learning the skills for the type of activities they enjoy and to excite and challenge them.

The development of Corps consist of the following in order:

  • JLTC - Junior Leadership Training Camp
  • Elite Corps
  • STT - Survival Training Trails
  • Special Forces
  • Pathfinders

The threads that run through all of the Corps are:

  • Service
  • Teamwork
  • Challenge
  • Trust
  • Confidence
  • Achievement

Goals of the Corps

  • Being your full potential in Christ
  • Sharing and giving yourself to the Lord and others
  • Stretching to new experiences
  • Instilling "GOD"esteem as opposed to "self" esteem
  • Instilling "Groupness" or a "gang" mentality in the good sense of the word, the feeling that "I belong: I'm special"
  • Identifying with caring, loving, spiritually strong leaders

The values that are considered important by individuals are affected by their sense of esteem. Much of the world's philosophy focuses upon self esteem. We want to instill God esteem because it shapes the values held by each person in the corps. We want to build a strong:

  • System of Belief
  • Expression of Belief
  • Perception of Belief
  • Acting on one's Belief

If you have your focus on the Lord, the way you react to your experiences will be tempered by your true belief and faith. The Corps set up different scenarios each year that will help the Ranger develop a strong belief system based upon God esteem, not self esteem. If you are a commander and think you are up for this level of a challenge, we welcome you to contact us by e-mail or by phone. We will be more than happy to provide you with additional information and anxiously await seeing you at Corps Leaders School.
